Edmund Jones wrote an account of a wealthy widow from the area who was courted by a number of suitors. One asked her for her hand in marriage and she obliged. However, a man of better standing then introduced himself and she accepted his request instead. This left the other suitor grief stricken. He cursed the woman and died, some say, from a broken heart.

 

Shortly after he died, the widow was sitting in her kitchen with her servants when she saw the ghost of the recently deceased man. The ghost then walked directly towards her and sat on the lap of the terror-stricken woman! She shrieked, causing her servants to turn, by which time they saw her being dragged unceremoniously across the floor by something they could not see. There then ensued a perverse tug of war, with he widow being used the rope. The servants eventually got the better of the entity. However, in the days that followed, the widows cattle began to die and her new suitor left her. The suspicious villagers believed that God was exacting revenge, and that the curse of the deceased suitor left the widow “impoverished”.
